AUSTRALIA’S Taronga Zoo has celebrated its first successful breeding of adorable short-beaked echidna in nearly 30 years. Keepers at the Sydney zoo are monitoring the progress of three healthy young echidna – known as puggles – and their first-time mothers: Ganyi, Spike and Pitpa. A puggle hatches after ten days and its mother carries it in a pouch-like skin for up to two months, until it begins to develop spines. It is then deposited in a specially constructed nursery burrow, with the mother returning to feed it every three to six days.
