Damnit, Chance.

Chance the Rapper’s long been known as a rap iconoclast, with a persona largely centered around humility. He’s a rapper with a bashful embrace of fame, but bars he can’t help being famous for. He raps about his relationship God, about the grit of Chicago’s South Side violence, and the bores of bling and materialism (his clique: Savemoney). He’s laid waste to so many archetypes that the modern day, flex-addicted rapper ostensibly needs. Chance the Rapper is, as far as they go, a Good Guy.

All of which makes this story about him and MTV brutally disappointing.

This week, journalist Jordan Sargent’s published a piece for SPIN about MTV News and their overlords’ decision to pivot their decision strategy from well-reported, smart (if not controversial) writing to video content. Of course, that pivot also involved layoffs of some of its most celebrated writers and editors. It was a thoroughly reported, well-sourced deep dive into the motivations behind the move, and it produced a number of fascinating tidbits behind the struggles MTV News faced covering the subjects it was often otherwise promoting. Facebook is targeting jerks who spam your News Feed

TwitterFacebook

Facebook is taking new steps to fight spam.

The social network will now weed out posts from spammers who fill their friends’ feeds with “vast amounts” of links to “low quality content.”

“We want to reduce the influence of these spammers and deprioritize the links they share more frequently than regular sharers,” writes Facebook’s VP of News Feed Adam Mosseri.

In this case, Facebook is setting a pretty high bar for what it considers a “spammer.” The update was designed to address the “tiny group” of users who share 50 or more public posts a day. Read more…

China's viral, dangerous toy: A $5 BB crossbow that shatters bottles

TwitterFacebook

This latest toy in China is causing alarm amongst parents.

A new pellet-shooting mini crossbow is picking up in popularity. The handsized toy, which can be held and fired like a handgun, shoots small metal BB pellets that are strong enough to penetrate fruit, crack glass bottles — and cause serious injuries.

More worryingly, the toys are extremely inexpensive, at $5 (33 yuan) each, making them accessible to most kids.

A report by the Legal Evening Post revealed that the makers of the laser-equipped crossbow also used to manufacture crossbows that shot wooden toothpicks. They moved on to making the BB pellet variation, after local governments and schools started to ban the viral but dangerous toys. Read more…

Makeup brand Nars is sorry for animal testing, but it's not going to stop either

TwitterFacebook

People are getting pretty pissed off at Nars.

The popular makeup brand is facing a wave of backlash, after it revealed that it began selling its products in China earlier this month — a country where animal testing is compulsory.

Nars Cosmetics had previously heavily marketed its cruelty-free practices. The company was acquired by Shiseido in 2000.

Shame on you! @NARS_makeup Reverting to animal testing for China’s market #vegan #CrueltyFree #AnimalRights

Girls please stop supporting Benefit and other non cruelty-free makeup brands! Nars, too, now tests on animals in China. STOP!!!!
