Matt Lauer terminated from NBC after alleged 'inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace'

TwitterFacebook

Matt Lauer has been terminated from NBC News for alleged “inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace,” per a statement from NBC News’ chairman Andrew Lack that was read on the Today show Wednesday morning by Lauer’s former co-host, Savannah Guthrie (sitting alongside Hoda Kotb).

The statement, following a report by an unnamed colleague, noted that while this was the first time someone had come forward about alleged inappropriate behavior by Lauer, they have “reason to believe this might not have been an isolated incident.”

After reading the statement, Guthrie said that as colleagues they only learned the news of his termination a few moments ago, and more details would be forthcoming later. Read more…

Evan Spiegel defends algorithms, criticizes Facebook in a new op-ed ahead of Snapchat's redesign

TwitterFacebook

Algorithms and social media are bad, unless they’re good, according to Snap CEO Evan Spiegel.

Yes, quite confusing, but that’s exactly what the cofounder of the app Snapchat argues in his first-ever op-ed posted on Axios Wednesday. The piece dropped just hours before Snapchat is expected to announce the details behind its massive redesign, Axios teased.

Why the talk of algorithms? Well it’s in Spiegel’s personal interest to both dispute and defend them. Snapchat plans to infuse its app with algorithms in a massive redesign, but while that’s similar to Facebook’s News Feed, it won’t be exactly like that.  Read more…

NASA's AI drone raced a human pilot, and we're officially living in a sci-fi movie

TwitterFacebook

NASA just tested the limits of artificial and human intelligence by pitting an AI-operated drone against one flown by a man.

The test was supported in part by Google-funded research and took place at an indoor track in Pasadena, CA. The drones flew at speeds of approximately 40 miles per hour. The opponents completed TK races.

To ensure the race was as evenly matched as possible, scientists enlisted pilot Ken Loo (aka FlyingBear), who participates in the International Drone Racing League.

At first, Loo was no match for his AI opponent. “This is definitely the densest track I’ve ever flown,” Loo said in a press statement.   Read more…

DragonMint 16T Miner Announced and Available for Pre-Order

Disclaimer: This is not a sponsored post. The authenticity of Halong Mining and the DragonMint Miners has yet to be verified. This information should not be taken as an endorsement.

Halong Mining, an unknown manufacturer of Bitcoin mining equipment, has entered the market with their first product called “DragonMint 16T”, and is promising to compete as one of the top mining equipment manufacturers. Bitmain-produced hashrate constitutes about 65% of the total Bitcoin hashpower in operation.

According to a Bitcoin Magazine post, the founder of this manufacturing enterprise is one of the most active Bitcoin Core Developers, BtcDrak. The reason BtcDrak undertook this venture is to bring forth more competition in the market and to enable more individuals to start mining Bitcoin.

Looking at their website, a few statements about their miner as well as a demonstration video can be found, as shown below.

(ASICs can emit upwards of 80 db, adjust the volume accordingly)

Supposedly, this is the world’s most efficient Bitcoin miner, featuring a 16 TH/s output, and a power efficiency of 0.075J/GH. The development of the miner itself started in December 2016 and took about 12 months to complete. The chips used are invented by Halong Mining and generate about 85GH per chip.

Unfortunately, the miners are not available for purchase yet. Instead, they are available for pre-order, with a delivery date set in March of 2018.

Testimonial

CEO and Co-Founder of blockstream.com, Adam Back, used Twitter to tell the public that he has personally seen the Dragon Mint 16T in operation, and vouches for the legitimacy of the product.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Over the past 12 months, about $30 million has been invested into research, development, and prototyping of miners. It is estimated that 4 months are necessary to produce one complete miner, which is why the pre-order delivery date is set for March 2018.

One of the most promising statements about the current state of events concerning DragonMint can be found on their website:

“We finished the prototyping, and we are moving onto mass production. At the same time, we are building relationships across the ecosystem to eventually generate a wide variety of ASIC products.”

Comparisons

It is difficult to make a comparison at this stage, although, if all of the data available is true, this is certainly the best miner on the market, out-powering even the Antminer S9. For now, it may be best to wait until March 2018 and collect data from people that have participated in the pre-order.

Conclusion

The prototype may be ready, but it’s going to be some time before mass production is in effect. Regardless of the fact that this venture is led by one of the most engaging Bitcoin Core Developers, it may be best to wait until the first batch has been tested by the public.

Investment Hacks: Things Your Brokers Don’t Tell You – Part 1

Investment SecretsMany consider cryptocurrency to be the new gold, but investment brokers are warning investors not to rush to buy into the market. Some governments, including both China and the United States, are doing what they can to stall interest and use of them. The caution by those who prefer traditional markets means your broker may not be telling you all the facts about investing in cryptocurrency.

The Value of Bitcoin

One thing brokers will not tell you is the incredible rise of Bitcoin’s value. Bitcoin, the leading and most recognizable cryptocurrency, has rallied in recent months. August ended well with the market reaching $150 billion. Its value jumped to $7,146, escalating 700 percent.

Bitcoin’s value is up an astounding 3,500 percent since it bottomed out in January, 2015. It tends to bounce around some and fell to $5,500 last week, but now is trading at more than $8,000.

The Future of Bitcoin

Brokers do not tell you about the growing use of Bitcoin. Most follow the opinion of Jamie Dimon, CEO of JP MorganChase, that the new currency is “a fraud” and is in a financial bubble, expected to burst at any moment.

However, other traditional investment banks are looking to establish a trading operation focusing on cryptocurrency. Goldman Sachs is one of the banking leaders investigating the prospect.

There are more stores also accepting Bitcoin, and some other cryptocurrencies, as payment for products and services. Those include the department store Target, food chain Subway, online retailer Overstock.com and Microsoft. Stores on the United States west coast particularly are open to accepting digital money for payment.

Standpoint Research analyst Ronnie Moas states more countries are accepting various digital monies with many even removing obstacles to encourage investment. Others like the United States are reluctant.

Governments want to continue to control monetary systems. They also don’t want people to be able to hide taxable gains, and digital currency makes watching gains more difficult.

One of the ways governments hinder digital currencies is they forbid Bitcoin or other cryptocurrency to be used in any governmental transactions, such as paying taxes, in many countries.

China took a harder line and banned both cryptocurrency trading on domestic exchanges and initial coin offerings, which is fundraising using digital cash, in September. The move caused Bitcoin to plunge. Some, including Mohamed El-Erian, Allianz chief economic adviser, said governments would not “allow the amount of adoption that is currently priced in” and believed Bitcoin was overvalued.

Yet, Moas raised Bitcoin’s target again with the new target at $14,000. He also set a 2022 target of $60,000. While that may seem aggressive, Moas bases his target on the idea there is $200 trillion of value-based assets globally, including stocks, bonds, gold and cash. He said there aren’t many solid investment options with value, so if only one half of 1 percent of global assets is put in Bitcoin, it’s value would jump to $1 trillion, Moas claims.

To be continued.

Trump's called Elizabeth Warren 'Pocahontas' at least 26 times—and it's not OK

TwitterFacebook

Since Aug. 2014, Donald Trump has referred to Sen. Elizabeth Warren as “Pocahontas” at least 26 times.

He mostly slings the slur on Twitter, but he’s also repeated it during rallies, interviews, and at meetings with fellow government officials — all attempts to discredit the senator by painting her with an offensive nickname that propagates one of Trump’s pet conspiracy theories.

His most recent use of the term was particularly tone deaf: he slid a non sequitur reference to “Pocahontas” in while speaking with Navajo code talkers at the White House on Tuesday — people the president was supposed to be honoring, but ended up deriding. Read more…
