It took a lot of work to launch humanity’s greatest message into space

“What I’ve found is if you look backward too often, that becomes your excuse, your evidence that you care,” said astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, when asked about the importance of this month’s 40th anniversary of the Voyager missions during a conversation at his office the Hayden Planetarium at American Museum of Natural History.

“But then, nothing happens going forward.”

Despite Tyson’s warning about spending too much time in the past, the magnitude of Voyager as a scientific achievement is the kind of thing that nevertheless demands recognition. That’s on the way, in the form of the new documentary The Farthest on PBS.  Read more…

Teens, you deserve a life free from phones and social media. Here's how to get it.

Anyone with a smartphone lives in fear of missing out at some point.

I’ve personally watched my Boomer parents’ eyes glaze over as they sit at the dinner table and scroll through Facebook. As a Gen X/Millennial Cusper (a Xennial, if you will), I deleted Facebook and Twitter from my phone, but still compulsively update Apple News.

The truth is, we feel drawn to our mobile devices because they deliver an exciting emotional rush every time we hold those shiny little computers in our hands and reveal what’s new in the world.   Read more…

SanDisk's new iXpand Base charges your phone and backs it up at the same time

TwitterFacebook

Everyone wants their iPhone backed up, but no one wants to take the time to actually do it.

SanDisk’s iXpand Base tries to solve that problem by backing up your phone every time you charge it.

First, you’ll need to download the iXpand Base iOS app and allow it to access your camera roll. From there, the system will backup all your photos, messages, and contacts.

It works with all existing and future iPhones that use a Lightning cable, as well as iPads (iPad 4, iPad Air 2, iPad Mini, and up). But it should be noted that the device doesn’t come with its own Lightning cable.  Read more…

Melbourne could soon be naming its train stations after locations in 'Game of Thrones'

TwitterFacebook

While there are no trains to speak of in Westeros, Melburnians plan to make their daily commute from Winterfell nonetheless.

Melbourne’s railway authority Melbourne Metro has invited the public to suggest names for five new Metro Tunnel stations across the city. More than 10,000 suggestions were made in the first 48 hours, with numerous Game of Thrones references amongst the most pitched.

Winterfell is the most popular Game of Thrones-inspired station suggestion, according to Melbourne Metro, and has been nominated for every station except Domain — the southern-most outpost. No true Northerner would dare call this Winterfell. Read more…

Oops: An Instagram bug let a hacker access phone numbers and email addresses

TwitterFacebook

What’s shady, possibly wearing a hoodie, and is currently sitting on the stolen personal information of an untold number of high-profile Instagram users?

That would be — SURPRISE! — a random hacker. Or several of them.

“We recently discovered that one or more individuals obtained unlawful access to a number of high-profile Instagram users’ contact information — specifically email address and phone number — by exploiting a bug in an Instagram API,” an Instagram spokesperson told Mashable via email. “No account passwords were exposed. We fixed the bug swiftly and are running a thorough investigation.” Read more…

Estonia Planning to Issue a National Cryptocurrency

Estonia has announced plans to launch an ICO as a way of raising funds and promoting its e-Residency program. The token, to be called “Estcoin” will be managed by the state, but like all cryptocurrencies, will be accessible to investors worldwide. Estonia is hoping this move will boost its economy, which has struggled since the 2008 recession.

Estonia began its e-Residency program in 2014. It enables non-citizens to become virtual residents, thus giving them the opportunity to open businesses and access financial services under Estonian jurisdiction. It is targeted toward persons who live in states where opening an online business is difficult due to bureaucratic or political restrictions. Kaspar Korjus, the e-Residency director, refers to it as a “borderless, digital nation.” The program has proven popular. Estonia currently has twenty-two thousand e-Residents from more than 138 countries, and thousands of Estonian-based online business have been created.

The small, Baltic nation has a history of adopting new technologies, and embracing innovation. Estonian public services are fully digitized, and every citizen has a secure digital identity. Also, Estonia is the only nation in the world to hold binding elections online. In addition to planning a national cryptocurrency, the government is exploring the integration of blockchain technology into systems such as healthcare and education.

Estonia is rumored to be considering an Ethereum-based token, and Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin is an advisor for the ICO project. Buterin has been outspoken in his support, stating “An ICO within the e-Residency ecosystem would create a strong incentive alignment between e-residents and this fund, and beyond the economic aspect makes the e-residents feel like more of a community since there are more things they can do together.”

The ICO appears to be the first step in a much broader plan by Estonia to digitize its economy and broaden the reach of e-Residency. The government is also working with a private firm to develop a cryptocurrency exchange, wallet, and token market to be named Mothership. Although Mothership will be available to everyone, its aim is to provide a common virtual economic space for its e-Residents.

Although a number of states are rumored to be exploring cryptocurrency adoption, this news marks the first time such a move has been announced by a state agency. It will no doubt provide a model from which other states can learn. The government has released few details of the ICO, such as its launch date and whitepaper. It claims more news on the project will be provided soon.

Are Investment Bubbles in the Crypto Space a Good Thing?

Bitcoin is in a bubble. That’s according to some. Billionaire investor Mark Cuban, BBC’s technology correspondent Rory Cellan-Jones and best-selling author and currency expert Jim Rickards are just a few names that spring to mind who are claiming this. Yet, even if this is the case, surely that’s not necessarily a bad thing and may […]
