The Uber ban in London only hurts the people who need it the most

When Transport for London (TfL) announced in September that it was planning to rescind Uber’s licence to operate in the city, a lot of people were shocked. Twitter was ablaze with angry comments, op-eds were published across the country, and an online petition to save the company began to circulate, quickly becoming the fastest growing Change.org petition of the year, as more than a quarter of a million people signed.

While this may seem excessive – there are a lot of causes out there which are arguably more valuable than a convenient transportation method – to a lot of people it’s not just about an easy, affordable way to get around without having to wait around for a bus. Uber can be a lifeline for women, people of colour, LGBT people, and people with disabilities, for whom black cabs are not an option and night buses can feel unsafe. Read more…
